Așezările umane reprezintă subiectul de studiu a diverse discipline. Încă din cele mai vechi timpuri, tendința omului spre apartenența la un grup social s-a făcut simțită prin formarea triburilor și întemeierea așezărilor. Evoluând, expresia dorinței umane de stabilizare s-a concretizat în crearea sistemelor din ce în ce mai complexe, astfel luând naștere, în cele din urmă, orașul. „Oraşul este forma complexă de aşezare omenească, cu dimensiuni variabile şi dotări edilitare, îndeplinind de obicei mai multe funcţii administrativă, industrială, comercială, politică şi culturală.” (DEX, 1996).

Human settlements are the subject of study of various disciplines. Since ancient times, the human tendency to belong to a social group has been felt through the formation of tribes and the founding of settlements. Evolving, the expression of the human desire for stabilization has materialized in the creation of increasingly complex systems, thus ultimately giving rise to the city. “The city is the complex form of human settlement, with variable dimensions and municipal facilities, usually fulfilling several administrative, industrial, commercial, political and cultural functions.” (DEX, 1996).
